RCIA Barbecue and Day of Fellowship

On Sunday, September 18^th Resurrection of The Lord in Waipio kicked off their RCIA process with a Barbecue Orientation and Day of Fellowship. It started with an exciting ice breaker; a biblical scavenger hunt that required teams to drive around the Waipio area looking for clues with bibles in hand. (of course all were instructed to be courteous and law abiding citizens!) our version of “The Amazing Race”, we called it “The Amazing Grace”. The goal of the activity was threefold: 1. to understand that what they were looking for was in their hands all along (“The Word”) 2. What they will gain in RCIA must be taken beyond the borders of the church into the world and 3. RCIA may not be quite what they expected, it is a process that will be filled with experiences, enlightenment and joy!

Resurrection’s RCIA is an on-going process. No cut-off day to sign-up. Inspired by the parable of the Prodigal Son, when the Holy Spirit sends them, we receive them with open arms. (Reported by Nadine Wheeler)

Mary Jane Program House Visit

On Friday, May 28, 2011 Bob Mace, Gaylene Colon, Lydia Pavao and Lulu Reyes traveled to the Mary Jane Program house in Kailua and presented the check for $1,469.05 to Faye Ramos and the staff of the Mary Jane Program. This was the money that we raised in our 2nd annual Pre Mother's Day Sale. Along with the check, we delivered diapers, baby wipes, baby food, maternity clothes, rosaries, religious cards and baby quilts & bedding. We had an opportunity to tour the house and meet some of the guests.

Mahalo once again to all of you who contributed your time, efforts, talents, money and materials to this good cause.

SCHOOL SUPPLY COLLECTION - Mahalo to everyone who contributed school supplies this year for the Island of Molokai’i. Along with parishioners from OLPH, Saint Jude, Saint Josephs, Immaculate Conception and Sacred Hearts we sorted and packaged 71 boxes of school supplies on the morning of July 4th for shipment to Molokai.

If you still wish to take advantage of the late summer school supply sales, and contribute, the collection bin will be out on the lanai through August. All additional school supplies collected will go to schools on Oahu, especially for homeless children living along the Waianae Coast. Mahalo and God bless.

Several weeks ago, I mentioned that the Bishop is asking all Catholics to become more involved with caring for the poor and homeless. We are trying to establish a ministry here at ROL for this purpose. Please contact me (391-4884) if you are interested. We want to explore the different directions this ministry can take. We may be involved in legislative efforts; we may be involved in renovating vacant public housing. Let's brainstorm. If I get one person to call me, we'll meet!

When emergency procedures are explained before an airplane takes off, we are instructed to put on our oxygen mask before trying to help others. Of course, the logic is that we can't help someone else if we aren't safe ourselves. But once we are safe, we are expected to help. Our Catechism instructs us that "God blesses those who come to the aid of the poor and rebukes those who turn away from them." It goes on even further to say that "Love for the poor is even one of the motives for the duty of working so as to 'be able to give to those in need.'" Yikes! That's a big assignment.

We have to ask ourselves, "What is enough?" How many shoes, purses, TVs, Starbuck's lattes, electronics, or clothes are enough? At what point is our "air supply" adequate so that we are expected to give back? Our parish family at ROL is extremely generous. When asked, the response is overwhelming sometimes. Can we do more? Always. The Bishop is asking us to take it to the next level and try to help SOLVE homelessness. It's an assignment bigger than us individually. We need to become involved in the Big Picture. Please pray on this to see if there is a role for you to play.

Many of you know that I am celebrating my Golden Anniversary as a Capuchin this year. A few weeks ago, the Diocese celebrated all the Priest and Religious who have a jubilee this year (25, 50 and 60 years either as a Priest or Religious). There were 16 of us honored with a beautiful Mass and luncheon for our service to God and the Diocese. For me, the actual anniversary date is September 1, the day in 1961 that I entered the Capuchin Order.

The reason I have not said anything is that I don’t want to make a big deal out of it. Yes, it is a great milestone in my life, but after 50 years, I should be a saint, but I am far from it. I am thankful to God for the gift of my vocation and can honestly say that the years have passed very quickly. It is hard to believe that I have been in the Order that long. This however, is a good lesson – life is short. When looking ahead, it might seem a long time, but looking back, it seems very short. I thank the Lord or these fifty years; they have been filled with growth in my relationship with God and my appreciation of His powerful presence. He has chosen me to follow in the footsteps of St. Francis as a Capuchin and I wouldn’t trade these fifty years for any other lifestyle or vocation. They have been beautiful years.

Thank you, everyone, for all your well wishes, for the many kind words that were written or said to me and for all your many gifts bestowed upon me. There is just one thing, however, that I must clear up. Some of your have been congratulating me for being a Priest for 50 years. On November 8th, I will have been a Priest for 42 years (not 50), but on September 1st, I will have been a Capuchin for 50 years.

Our plan is to end class at 12:45 and have an Easter Egg Hunt with a message. Parents, please come and join your children and lend some assistance. In a full-page ad in the New York Times in January, 1994, the Coalition for the Homeless ran a drawing of Jesus with a large caption below: How can you worship a homeless man on Sunday and ignore one on Monday?

I am so proud to say that that is not the situation here at ROL with our parish family. Please know that the increased food donations for our “Here the Hungry Find Plenty” effort are greatly appreciated. The containers virtually overflow after each Mass on weekends. The response is better than hoped for. We are happy to see that shopping for the less fortunate is becoming part of your weekly trip to the market.

Of course, there will always be more that can be done either through the Social Ministry programs we currently have in place or through ways we have still to learn. This week the governor announced a grassroots effort to identify, locate and help our homeless brothers and sisters. This is often as simple as keeping our eyes open for people in our neighborhood who need help.

From our Catechism of the Catholic Church, (Col 3:14), “The practice of all the virtues is animated and inspired by charity, which ‘binds everything together in perfect harmony.’ Charity upholds and purifies our human ability to love, and raises it to the supernatural perfection of divine love.” As Jesus said, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”

HE IS RISEN!! Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Having completed our Lenten observance and celebrated the liturgies of the Paschal Mystery, I hope and pray that all of us are renewed in body and spirit and in faith and hope. As exhausting as these days of the Sacred Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter celebration) are for me, they are also so very uplifting. If we allow ourselves to immerse ourselves into the mysteries of these days (not just recall the history), it can be uplifting for all of us.

Resurrection of the Lord’s Living Stations of the Cross

During the Lenten, Season Resurrection of the Lord’s youth groups annually present a Living Stations of the Cross reenactment. This year’s performance, produced and directed by Makana Aiona and Carissa Oshiro, was especially realistic and moving. Many parishioners at Sunday Mass, following the April 8th presentation, commented on how they were affected by the reenactment, especially the strong performances by Benita Incillio as Mary, Eric Ordarica as Jesus and Brazsia Incillio as Veronica. Parishioner John Wheeler commented that “It was very well planned and it really touched my heart. One of the things I remember was, at the 12th station when Jesus was crucified, the moon came out from behind the clouds, and after Jesus was taken down, it disappeared again (Chicken Skin)!” Mahalo to ROL youth for their many hours of rehearsal and performance to present the Passion of our Lord in all it’s terrible glory. Bishop Silva has urged all the parishes in the Diocese to reflect and talk about the homeless situation here in the Islands. He feels that, as the largest Christian Church in Hawaii, the Catholic Church should take the lead in coming up with solutions for building affordable housing. In his letter to the parishes, he stresses prayer, but also wrote the following ideas on how to implement the plan for building these homes.

. Call together Catholic realtors to reflect on what they can do to help solve this challenge by identifying potential properties for affordable housing of various kinds and create a plan to acquire them.
. Call together Catholic attorneys who would volunteer their time to offer advice on the transfers of properties, and to tend to other legal matters.
. Gather Catholic bankers and financial planners to search out possible sources of funding for land purchase, building costs and maintenance.
. Ask Catholic facilities managers for advice on policies regarding the housing units to be developed.
. Ask Catholic land owners to consider donations of land parcels, of various sizes, for affordable housing.
. Call together Catholic developers to discuss how we can work in the long term to make sure that enough affordable housing is available to meet the needs of our community.
. Gather Catholic social workers to formulate plans to meet the social service needs of housing clients.
. Gather Catholic healthcare workers to offer health services to clients who may need them.

Once the Affordable Housing plan is established, we hope to mobilize Catholics and others interested in the issue, so that families or parishes can be sponsors for families seeking affordable housing but who may need training in financial management, maintenance or educational needs.

Journal: How did you live out last week’s Gospel message? What was tough? What was rewarding?

I admire the way Muslims fast.
During their holy month of Ramadan, in the fall, Muslims abstain each day from all food and drink from sunrise to sunset. I have a Muslim friend who once told me his hunger helps him focus on what he really craves—union with God.
This week’s Gospel talks about Jesus’ forty-day fast. When the devil tempts him with food, Jesus replies that “one does not live on bread alone, but on every work that comes forth from the mouth of God.” Like my friend’s’ fast, Jesus fast focused him on his deepest hunger—union with God.
What do you crave? Our culture creates a lot of hungers. Sometimes it might seem like we can’t live without that special TV show or those shoes or that soft drink. Our consumer culture can create cravings that cause some people to choose selfishness over even friends or family. That’s why fasting can be a really good thing for people. When we give up something we crave—anything from a TV show to a favorite food—we realize that we can live without it.
Why not try a strict fast this Lent? Give up something you’ll really miss, like a meal each week, all drinks but water, or a favorite TV show. When the hunger comes, think instead about God and God’s promises. Then ask yourself, “What do I really crave?”

Journal: What can you give up for Lent that will cause you to remember your need for God? What will you do to build your hunger for God? in prayer? in service? In love for God and neighbor? Be specific.

At its January meeting, in response to Bishop Silva's urging for all Catholics to become more aware of the plight of the homeless, our Pastoral Council voted unanimously to increase our efforts to collect non-perishable food items here at ROL. I am encouraging and asking all parishioners to take part in this effort, called "Here the Hungry Find Plenty." Beginning this Wednesday, Ash Wednesday, there will be a special box located at each of the entrances. We are asking that you drop off your food items in these boxes before Mass. One representative will be chosen from among our parishioners at each Mass to carry a food item from the boxes to the altar at the presentation of the gifts. Please note that we are not asking you to make a large donation weekly. The goal is to develop a habit for each of us to keep those less fortunate in our thoughts as we shop. Some Sundays you may simply grab something from your own kitchen pantry on your way to Mass. It is meant to be a continual reminder of our good fortune and the very basic needs of our friends in Christ.

In the Catechism of the Catholic Church it reads, "The Last Judgment will reveal even to its furthest consequences the good each person has done or failed to do (remember how we start each Mass, "I confess to Almighty God…..") during his earthly life: …..He will turn towards those at His left hand: "I placed my poor little ones on earth for you….my members on earth were in need….But you have placed nothing in their hands; therefore you have found nothing in my presence."

The Catholic Church seems to be awakening from a long slumber to become more visible and insistent about helping the poor and homeless. There are a number of initiatives being supported at the legislature concerning these issues. Please call your Senator and Representative and tell them that the time has come to sort through the issues that place people in tents at the beaches and on the narrow strips along the sidewalks.

Here at Resurrection of the Lord, your Pastoral Council has voted on a goal for this year of increasing the amount of non-perishable food collected. Father will be announcing this effort at all Masses this weekend; and the program, "Here the Hungry Find Plenty," will begin on Ash Wednesday. The goal is to have each family bring a food item each week. Please read the announcement on the back of this article and post it in a handy place where you can be reminded of this effort when you grocery shop. Currently our donations are divided between Our Lady of Good Counsel in Pearl City and Sacred Heart in Waianae. Depending on the success of this drive, we may be able to consider helping others. Please make your thoughts on this known.

Thomas Awiapo has a truly inspiring story of survival and success. Orphaned before the age of ten, Thomas survived bleak poverty and hunger in his small Africa village. His search for food led him to school at 12, and he eventually won scholarships to attend college and later earn a Master's degree in the United States. Today he works for Catholic Relief Services training community leaders throughout Ghana and promoting outreach to our sisters and brothers in need throughout the world.

Thomas' village received help from Catholic Relief Services (CRS) through Operation Rice Bowl, the program that connects prayer, fasting and almsgiving with education about poverty and hunger around the world. Thomas' visit is sponsored by CRS as a way to thank Catholic communities for their support and to raise awareness about hunger, relief development.

Journal: How did you live out last week’s Gospel message? What was tough? What was rewarding?

Never forget Christopher Reeve.
He played Superman in movies. He was wealthy, popular, attractive, and fit. Then one day he broke his neck riding a horse, and he could no longer use his arms or legs.
But that didn’t ruin him. In fact, his life seemed to take on new meaning as he worked endlessly for a cure to paralysis. This man, who could move only a few muscles, changed the lives of millions by raising money to fight paralysis. Ironically, he became a real “superman” once his body broke down. This week, Jesus talks about life’s hard realities. Don’t count on your popularity, academic success, or physical talents to make your life meaningful. As Christopher Reeve discovered, it all can change in an instant. Life is full of storms. You will fail. You will experience loneliness. You will get older. Your body will break down.
Then where will you turn? Thanks to God we have a rock for security during those storms. He is Jesus, the Christ. Because of him, we can find a meaningful life regardless of the storms that hit us—just as Christopher Reeve did. That’s good news, but it’s also a warning. As a teen you set priorities and develop habits for living. Build your house on a rock by developing Christian habits.
Pray daily. Learn to lengthen your daily prayer time. Join a Christian group, where people know you and are there for you during tough times. Regularly serve those who suffer. It will remind you of how much you can offer regardless of your success, beauty, wealth, or popularity. Learn to forgive and apologize. That will build you a circle of faithful friends.
Build your solid foundation now. The storms will come.

Lent is upon us! This coming Wednesday, March 9, is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. Masses are at 6:30 a.m. and at 7:00 p.m. Ashes will be blessed and distributed at each Mass.

In her wisdom, the Church set aside this season of Lent, this season of repentance, to remind ourselves of the constant need to repent and cleanse ourselves of our sins. It is a season of penance and prayer. It leads us to Easter, the great celebration of our salvation. I urge you to use this season well.

As a reminder for us all, the Church has certain laws during Lent. As a Catholic, one must abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, however, fasting is encouraged throughout the season of Lent, especially every Friday. This is the bare minimum. As God’s special people, given the opportunity of this season, should we not want to do more to renew our relationship with God and recognize what is keeping me from a closer relationship? The traditional forms of penance are prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Spending extra time in prayer (which includes Scripture reading and reflection), denying myself certain foods and becoming more aware of the needy through my volunteering and almsgiving, all help me to come closer to God. Using the Sacrament of Penance (confession) is a tremendous way of letting go of the past and experiencing God’s mercy, thus getting closer to Him. In addition to Sunday, coming and celebrating the Eucharist on one or more weekdays; the Council of Trent calls the Eucharist “a remedy to free us from our daily faults and to preserve us from mortal sin”.

As for devotions: Every Friday during Lent we will have Stations of the Cross at 7:00 p.m.; aids such as the “Word Among Us” will be available to all who want it, to help us read and reflect on the Scriptures; the monthly handouts such as “Everyday Catholic” and “Catholic Updates” give us many spiritual insights for our daily living. IHS Breakfast Serving

What a great opportunity to answer the call of our Lord Jesus Christ to serve the least among us. Yet, out of all the Resurrection of the Lord parishioners, only six signed up to serve at our scheduled breakfast meal serving in February, and only three actually showed up to serve.

Our next scheduled serving is March 27th. A signup sheet will be posted on the bulletin board, in the worship area, outside the parish kitchen.

Journal: How did you live out last week’s Gospel message? What was tough? What was rewarding?

Dishonesty. It plagues our high schools. Many students will do anything to get ahead. Some teachers go crazy trying to develop ways to stop cheating. Others are heartbroken when students they respect justify academic dishonesty.
And Jesus said, “Seek first…the highest grade, the best college…” Uh, not exactly. I attended a Catholic high school. While in college, I helped out at Catholic high schools. I worry about the pressure students feel to be number one.
Here is the message many students pick up: “I have to get the highest grades and be in the most activities—otherwise, I won’t get into the best college. If I don’t get into the best college, I will be a failure.” Too often, even well-meaning parents and guidance counselors feed that message.
That message can devastate young people. It leads some to justify dishonesty. It leads others to use alcohol and other drugs. It leads others to experience depression and despair.
If you’ve heard that message, let me offer a different one—one from the God who will always be with you. “Seek first the kingdom of God, and all these things will follow.” Here’s how you do that. Develop your character. Honesty, compassion, and generosity will make your life more meaningful than the highest grades, longest resume, or best college. Develop your prayer life. Using daily prayer and attending weekly Mass will remind you that God’s love and protection don’t depend on personal success.. Build time into your schedule for service. That reminds you that you don’t need a high ACT or SAT score to make a difference in the world and feel good about yourself.
Sure, work hard in school. Develop your brain and body through activities. But remember, almost any school can prepare you well for a career if you work hard. Also remember, our world needs more people with Christian character, not more millionaires.

Faithful Citizenship - February 27, 2011

In his book, "The 100 Simple Secrets of Happy People," author David Niven lists "Do what you say you are going to do" as #24. He writes, "Nothing kills progress or deadens enthusiasm more than someone who talks but never follows through." I must admit, though, that I am rarely surprised by people not following through. It seems that our busy lives preclude really doing much of what we say, hope or promise to do. Barack Obama and Neil Abercrombie, however, are walking around with the big smiles of happy people these days.

In his campaign for governor, Abercrombie PROMISED voters that he would sign a civil union (note how often the word marriage is used now when describing a "civil union") bill if it were placed on his desk. Done deal. He also PROMISED there would be no increase in the general excise tax IF he got what he wanted in the other parts of his yet-to-be-presented budget. Nobody gets everything they want from their proposed budget. That's why even kids ask for $20 when they'd be happy with $10. Keep your hands on your wallet, the governor's still smiling!

And guess who else is flashing the big smile of a happy person these days? President Obama PROMISED us that he was going to "fundamentally change America." What we couldn't have anticipated in that fundamental change was that he would disregard the U. S. Constitution. This week he directed his Attorney General to no longer defend the Defense of Marriage Act despite it having been passed by Congress during President Clinton's time. Remember also that he said he wouldn't want either of his girls "punished with a baby if they make a mistake." He's made no secret of his stand on abortion. Daughters of Saint Paul - Books and Media Sale at ROL

For many ROL parishioners it's difficult to get downtown to the Pauline Bookstore. So, at the request of ROL parishioner and faithful customer, Gaylene Colon, the Daughters of Saint Paul brought the bookstore to Waipio. After each Mass last weekend Sister Linh and Sister An Mei offered an assortment of spiritual books, DVD's and rosaries for the parishioners of Resurrection of the Lord parish to view and purchase. We at ROL would like to thanks the Daughters of Saint Paul for their dedication and service in bringing the word of Our Lord, and the Catholic Church, to our Hawaiian Ohana. “I’m Jasmine, this is Elle, and that’s Carlyn. We are currently in our second year of confirmation and as a requirement; we must fulfill a sponsor/candidate project. We, with our sponsors, have decided to collect donations.

First, we are doing a clothes drive. This is to support Queens Medical Center, where patients are in need of clothing. We are asking for sizes from teens to adults.

We are also collecting donations of slippers and shoes. This is to support Ho’omalu, a home for children in foster care. Any size of new or gently used footwear is accepted.

We are also collecting monetary donations, so we can buy these items. One dollar can get a child a new pair of slipper!

Collection boxes for the clothing and footwear will be out next week; February 26th and 27th and also the following week; March 5th and 6th.

The patients at Queens and the children of Ho’omalu really appreciate your generosity. Thank you!

If you’ve been watching what’s been going on in Egypt for the last several weeks, you can see what frustration can do to a citizenry. Imagine what it takes to get that many people out in the streets day after day, clamoring for change. Remember when they held the first elections in Iraq, and people were willing to risk their lives for a chance to vote?

Have you seen the bumper sticker “Freedom Is Not Free?” It’s not just a catchy phrase that makes a soldier feel proud of his/her service. It implies rights (Freedom) and responsibilities (Not Free). We are on the opposite end of the freedom spectrum than the people in Egypt, Iraq and other places around the world. We enjoy so many freedoms that we need to be mindful that there are limits. One piece of chocolate a day may not hurt you, but unlimited amounts may kill you (unfortunately). We have the freedom to drink and drive, but the responsibility not to.

The legislature is again struggling with the civil union issue. There is no longer any confusion over whether the proponents intend eventually to push for gay marriage. They have all but said so. It is not an issue of whether or not we love people of differing life styles, but simply whether or not we see ourselves as a society where marriages will be other than between a man and a woman. As I write this, I’m assuming that the House will pass their version of the civil union bill on Friday. They have the votes. But we still have time to contact both our Senator and our Representative because the bill will probably end up in conference committee. Rep. Henry Aquino is against civil unions. He needs our thanks and support. Sen. Nishihara is for the measure. He needs our prayers and a phone call or e-mail. Please let your thoughts be known. Gotta go boot up my hard drive! Aloha-- Mary B

ROL Parishioner Gabriel (Gabby) Balais awarded Ad Altare Dei Religious Emblem

During a special Saturday night Boy Scout Mass at the Our Lady of Peace Cathedral, Resurrection of the Lord parishioner, Alter Server and Saint Louis High School junior Gabriel (Gabby) Balais, (along with Walter Benevitz another ROL Alter Server), was awarded the Ad Altare Dei (Catholic) Religious Emblem by Bishop Larry Silva. This emblem is awarded not by the Boy Scouts of America, but by various religious groups. Gabby was awarded this emblem by the Diocese of Honolulu Catholic Committee on Scouting (DHCCS), after completing the Ad Altare Dei class, which was conducted at ROL parish. The Ad Altare Dei (to the alter of God) program is organized in chapters based on the seven Sacraments as the primary means towards spiritual growth. Gabby and his proud parents, Bobby and Eloise Balais, would like to give special Mahalo’s to Gabby’s Ad Altare Dei instructor, Uncle John Wheeler; his Confirmation Director, Auntie Liz Shippen; his Confirmation Sponsor, Uncle Kerry Nishimoto; and Scout Chaplain for DHCCS, Fr. Paul Zaccone, ss.cc for their guidance and support. The Balais family (Gabby’s brother Matt is a freshman at Saint Louis High) feels truly blessed to have these spiritual guides in Gabby’s life. Filipino (and other) recipes, prepared by you, can be dropped off at ROL church between 5 and 5:30 pm on serving Sunday. Aluminum pans are best, and can be provided to you by the parish Social Ministry. We also need help transporting food and serving items from ROL to The Lighthouse Homeless Shelter in Waipahu. Set up is from 6 to 6:30 pm, and serving is from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. We then return items to the church and clean up. We finish around 8:15 pm. Can you help? Journal: How did you live out last week's Gospel message? What was tough? What was rewarding?

Some years ago, I was riding in a van with some teenagers when I jokingly threatened to tie a loud kid to the roof with a cord. That way, I joked, he could still ride with us but we wouldn't have to listen to him. His response? "That would be cool." And he probably would have enjoyed it. Teenagers like risk. Rock climbing. Driving fast. The rush of adrenalin. The thrill of adventure. That's why teenagers make excellent disciples. Following Jesus is all about risk. In this week's Gospel, Jesus calls his disciples to risk. The Beatitudes (which is what we call the list in this Gospel) are risky actions Jesus tells his followers to choose. For example, be poor in spirit. (Ask God's guidance for all decisions.) Be meek. (Treat others as if they're more important than you.) Mourn. (Don't hide your pain.) Be merciful. (Choose forgiveness.) Be a peacemaker. (Work publicly for peace and justice.) You take a risk when you live a Beatitude. People might mock you for letting God, rather than wealth or popularity, set your direction. People might put you down when someone hurts you and you don't get even. People might call you crazy for protesting abortion or war. But Jesus says God will bless us when we take these risks. In other words, God will act in our favor. So when you let God direct you, God will give you a meaningful life. When you face your pain and mourn, God will comfort you through prayer or by sending people to help you. When you choose mercy and work for peace, God will give you the strength you need to forgive and the courage to stand publicly against violence. So take a risk this week. Live the Beatitudes. It's an adventure.

One day you drive up to your house, and you think to yourself, “Gee, it seems like only yesterday when we painted, but it sure could use it again.” Or you open your credit card statement and suddenly realize there’s no way you’re going to be able to pay the total in your lifetime. It’s my favorite lesson learned from the poor lobster in the pot: it seemed so comfortable all along, but now it’s too hot to get out!

I think we’re in that pot again. Last session, at the very last moment, HB444 was revised to create “civil unions.” Proponents argued that the bill was not meant to be a gay marriage bill, but all the wording in it referenced the Hawaii Revised Statute concerning traditional marriage. No, they argued, that’s what it looks like, but we are not trying to weaken traditional marriage. Well, fast forward to this session. The bill has surfaced early on; and, despite all the controversy and emotion generated by it last May, Gov. Abercrombie didn’t even address it in his State of the State on Monday. He says we all know where he stands.

Where’s the lobster been? If you are over 40 years old and think back to the type of TV shows, magazine articles and ads that you first remember, then compare them to what your children see and hear today, you will see how their strategies have been effective. We were told that you didn’t have to be married to live together and have kids. Then we were told that “love” made a family, not a mom and dad. Next they asked why shouldn’t we be treated the same for tax purposes, etc. as other “families?” Then came Hawaii’s 1997 Reciprocal Beneficiaries law, and things calmed down for a while, on the surface, at least. But now, the very structure of our society is being challenged. If we don’t make our views known, fairytales will someday begin with “Once upon a time, there was a family with a mom and dad……” Call your legislator this week. All listings are in the front of the phone book!

FYI --- The parish church cleaning for the 3rd Sat. of each month was taken on two years ago, to help Ed Lee. The family that originally cleaned the church during this period was not able to continue the much needed service. During one of our conversations after church, Ed expressed to me, the difficulty in finding people in our parish to help, even after announcements from Father to the parish. I initially took on the project on behalf of our Lector ministry, until other ministers in the Eucharistic and Music ministries suggested that all ministries should get involved. Collectively, we are about 90+ strong and with the consideration of the time and number of people needed to clean the church, the ministers and even their families would more than sufficiently complete the task.

Consider .....

10 Saturdays in a year, one Sat. per month (Confirmation candidates does about 2 of our Sat. in the year) X 2 hours minimum each Sat. to clean, Equals = 20 hours a year

We need at least 6 people per Sat. X 10 Saturdays in the year = 60 people min.

There are a few that take on the church cleaning every scheduled Saturday + those from Confirmation that come with their sponsors/parents to make up their service hours or just come because they want to. AND given that those that do come, also bring their family/friends, means that we (ministries) could easily fulfill the need every 3rd Sat.

Father Paul will be making an announcement regarding the church cleaning efforts after each mass in February, but with an urgency for a call to action. This time he will be seeking help for every Saturday.

There are several ways we can manage this, but our first concern is our commitment for the 3rd Sat. of each month.

Confirmation I and II: January 23, 2011: Third Sunday in Ordinary Time – Read the Gospel: Mt 4:12-23

Journal: How did you live out last week’s Gospel message? What was tough? What was rewarding?

(Mt 4:12-17)
What do you think went through Jesus’ mind when they arrested John? Remember that John and Jesus were close. Herod, who arrested John, was a cruel tyrant. Jesus must have realized John was facing torture and a brutal death. The Gospel makes it sound like Jesus withdrew for prayer and reflection. Did he reconsider dedicating his life to God? Did he need to grieve? Was he afraid? Did he consider seeking revenge? No one is sure why he withdrew, but it must have been a tough time for him.
The Gospel also says that John’s arrest marked the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. So he withdrew but then decided God was calling him to start his own ministry to replace John’s.
How do you deal with tragedy and loss? It seems that Jesus responded by starting his own ministry to announce God’s Reign of peace. Too often today it seems that people respond to tragedy with destructive options. Some lash out at others or use alcohol or other drugs or some other behavior to numb the pain. Some give up.
Follow Jesus’ example. God doesn’t bring tragedy into your life, but God certainly wants to help you deal with it or learn from it. Prayer and discussion with other Christians will help you hang in there during tough times or learn how to avoid them in the future. Write letters to God in a private journal. Learn to meditate. Like Jesus, you will find that wisdom or even a new direction for your life comes from a tragedy.
Here’s a good example. I know students whose family members have suffered some form of cancer. But they have let that tragedy motivate them to improve the lives of others. They are doing that by educating others about the different types of cancer and raising money to help find a cure. Like Jesus, they suffered painful tragedy, but they let the tragedy—with the help of God—guide them in acting to make the world a better place.

Journal: In what specific ways could teens let God help them through tragedy? Be specific. Do you know people who have responded to tragedy by using their experiences to help others? .

Our Windows

The stained glass windows in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel and the Marian Shrine contain almost no traditional Christian symbols. One image that forms the foundation for both sides is the earth, the “aina”, a precious concept for the people of this land and, hopefully, for all of us. We also see a rainbow, beginning and ending in each window, spanning the entrance to our Church: it is not only a common sight in our lands, it is mostly a sign of God’s love for us, the renewal of His Covenant with us, as we know from Genesis 3:19.

The main thought in the Marian Shrine window is, of course, Mary … but in her role as “Mother.” There is the imagery of creation, life coming forth. Even as the oozing lava creates the face of the earth, new life in the green plants seen sprouting forth from desolation is clear. Living creatures abound on earth, in the sea and the sky. The land is itself created and the land still brings forth life. (Since the human image of Mary is already present in statue form in the Shrine area, it is not duplicated in the window.) Mary brought forth the Savior Who then brought life everlasting to all. From the stump springs the Shoot; from the desolation of sin comes New Life.

The Blessed Sacrament, the Holy Eucharist, is the BREAD OF LIFE. It nourishes and sustains the New Life we now have through the saving act of Jesus: to suffer, to die, to rise. The earth, too, is a source of nourishment, as is the sea and even the sky. The earth brings forth life. (Since God is physically present in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, the images of wheat and grapes, hosts and chalices seemed trite and were not included in the window.) Breadfruit, pineapple, mango, banana, sugarcane … almost gone, but how it has sustained life! – The Hawaiian word “aina” means land, earth, the word “aina” means, meal. Our Sacred Meal nourishes and sustains us.

When you stand inside one of these rooms, close your eyes and try to imagine what you might see outside, if the townhouses, asphalt, street lights, cars – all that we have placed on the earth, in the way – were gone. Open your eyes! Look and see!! If you still have difficulty finding meaning in these very beautiful windows, take a small child by the hand and stand in front of one of them. Watch and listen, as the little one, with unbridled excitement finds a snail and a bird and a flower and a dolphin. Watch and listen, as the little one points out the face of God! Look and see!! Open your mind and heart and soul. Look and see!!

ROL Secretary Lauralie Loughlin retires after 22 years of service

After 22 years of service to Resurrection of the Lord Catholic Church in Waipio-Gentry, parish secretary Lauralie Loughlin retired on December 31, 2010. During that time, Laura worked first for Fr. Ed Turner as he and the early parishioners created the new Catholic community. By the time the new church building was completed in 1995, Father Ron Burke was the parish priest; and Laura moved into her new office. In 2002, Father Paul Minchak came to ROL.

On Saturday, January 15, 2011, the parish planned and successfully executed a surprise retirement party for Laura. On the ruse of attending the 5:15 PM Mass to celebrate the Baptism of her 12th grandchild, Laura was completely unaware of the evening that awaited her. Her husband and all six of their children were in on the secret. When Father Paul asked what the family asked of the church, Laura expected her daughter-in-law to say, “Baptism.” Instead she said, “We’d like our son to be at the retirement party of his grandmother.” Father Paul then announced to Laura that there would be no Baptism (that has been officially scheduled for April), but instead she was to be honored for her many years of service to Resurrection of the Lord.

In addition to lots of good food, the evening included two songs sung by her grandchildren, a hula performed by Nicole Naong, beautiful tributes by Fr. Paul, her husband John, and Parish Council Chair Mary Bretschneider as well as music provided by several church members and their friends. Laura was gifted with a travel credit at AAA and a gift certificate purchased with funds donated by parish members. Many hands, including volunteer Confirmation candidates and Youth Ministry members, worked to make the evening a success. The parish wanted Laura to know that she will be missed.

Well, maybe not. All of us that have heard Father Paul sing at Mass can't imagine him on stage singing "I Can't Get No Satisfaction". The dance moves might also prove a little difficult. We'll just have to keep him as our priest here at Resurrection of the Lord for a little while longer. At least until the Black Eyed Peas have an opening for a new singer.

Epiphany Project at Next Step Homeless Shelter

On Saturday, January 8, 2011, our Confirmation candidates, with adults, went to the Next Step Homeless Shelter as an Epiphany project. There were approximately 150 shelter residents there. They numbered 33 candidates; with parents and sponsors, for a total of approximately 115 from ROL. They spent $3500, approximately $1100 was given out in the form of gift cards to Sears, Ross, Payless, McDonald's during BINGO and drawings. Also purchased and given away were brand new pillows and pillow cases for each resident, from adult to infants. Lunch was ham, fried noodles, rice, corn, fruits, cake and beverages. Entertainment was provided by Nathan Kop. They were there from 9am-3pm. This was the 3rd consecutive year that we partied with them for Epiphany. Mahalo to all at ROL who participated in events that helped fund this service. Mahalo to you who went and served those in need.

Faithful Citizenship - January 9, 2011

Happy New Year to all! I’ve taken the last two weeks off to enjoy the Christmas Season. But, as I opened my folder this morning, I was agai reminded that problems don’t go away without hard work.

Our legislative session will begin soon. While there will be lots of issues on the table as lawmakers scramble to get money to balance the budget, one issue remains consistently before us; and, although talked and gawked about, homelessness is no closer to being solved today than it was a year or two ago.

We had family visiting over the last 10 days. Everyone knows that that usually involves a drive “around the island.” You also know that the drive doesn’t really go all the way around the island, but ends in a small, dirt parking lot before you can begin a 45-minute walk to the sanctuary at Kaena Point. Along the way, you pass some of the longest and widest beaches on Oahu. With the waves pounding in an impressive roar or swishing up along the beach, either way is an impressive sight. Those beaches at various times over the last five years have been cluttered with tents and other worldly possessions of huge numbers of homeless. News media followed their evictions as they were forced to grab what they could carry or transport in their mostly unlicensed, uninsured vehicles and move to another location. Over time, they have settled, pretty much unhassled it seems, in the bushes and coves near beautiful Yokohama Bay. It’s scary and very sad to see such sights in what our travel brochures try their darndest to project as the most trouble- and care-free place on earth.

On Baptism of the Lord Sunday, Father Paul Minchak celebrated the Renewal of Baptismal Promises with 21 of our Confirmation II candidates. This is another step as they prepare for The Right of Conformation this upcoming Easter Season, which will be celebrated by Bishop Larry Silva. Our Confirmation director, Liz Shippen stated, "Basically, the candidates' parents spoke for them and made the baptismal promises for them, promising to bring them up in the faith. At this rite, the children, now of age, have made their own decision and are accepting responsibility for their own spiritual growth and acknowledgment that the path involves living out their baptism, day-to-day. On the Baptism of the Lord, yesterday, and annually, we celebrate our baptism to remind of us the gift that has been given to us by our Lord." Our prayers go with them as they continue on their journey towards full confirmation in the Catholic Church.

Well over a year ago, we formed a Building and Maintenance Committee. There were twenty four people at the meeting and it was very encouraging. While many of you have always been available to see that areas of the Parish are well maintained and regular maintenance is being done, we have not had a meeting of this committee as such. I believe that we must start meeting because some major decisions have to be made soon. The building is nearing the 20 year mark and many items are showing their age. For example, one of the air conditioners in the Conference Room is broken. The company that maintains our air conditioners said it could be fixed, but it will be expensive and we would be wasting our money because it is so old and inefficient. They will have to break into the wall. If we break into the wall, we might just as well replace it. The other air-con in that room is not working well either.

The Diocese hired the Trane Co., to do an assessment on energy use in all the Parishes in the Diocese. They assessed our building over a month ago. While I haven’t received their report yet, I am told that, for the size of our building and of the Parish, we are spending more money on energy than any other Parish on Oahu. It doesn’t surprise me as I cringe every time our power and water bills come in. They offer suggestions to us on how to be more energy efficient. Off the record, I asked the man who did the assessment what we could do about our water bills. Since the biggest culprit of our high bills is the toilets, he thought it would be wise to replace them all with more commercial type toilets.

Meanwhile, our New Building Committee is meeting to not only plan for the new building, but also on how to renovate this building. While I don’t want to interfere with future plans, there are certain things that must be tackled now. Hopefully our Building and Maintenance Committee can meet soon so that we can begin dealing with the present problems. I don’t want to make these decisions on my own.

Purposed Changes for Our Food Collection Program to Begin in January 2011

1. We set up a collection box in the narthex that people can donate none perishable food to at any time.

2. We set up a section of our Social Ministry shelves in the store room for a small food bank to be given to ROL parishioners whenever they are in need.

3. We also let it be known in the parish that we collect perishable food items for distribution to parishioners in need. I have had parishioners approach me and say they have perishable food items they would like to contribute. These could be monitored on a daily basis. If they are reaching end of life, we can give them to the Lighthouse on a daily basis.We can keep the perishable food items in the refrigerator in the conference room.

4. This small scale food bank, for ROL parishioners in need, will be run casually. If we have food and someone needs it, we give it, no questions asked, and no accounting. It can be given out by the people in the office (Laura, Carey, Nadine, Father Paul) Bob or Liz by phone request.

Easing world poverty with spare change By Elizabeth Balao | Special to the Herald

Why are so many third world farmers impoverished? It is not only because of primitive conditions and natural disasters. Many farmers are the victims of corrupt financial systems. Columban Father Shay Cullen, who spent time with farmers in remote areas of the Philippines, explained the reality in the March 2009 issue of World Mission, a Catholic magazine.

He wrote: “The farmers are impoverished because they give one-third of their crop to the landowner and pay the high cost of terminator seeds that have to be bought annually because they are designed not to reproduce themselves. They have to be bought yearly with the matching chemical fertilizer and pesticides made by a multi-national corporation.”

He went on to expose the rotten and corrupt system of government and Philippine lending institutions. “This unjust system is the greatest cause of poverty,” he said.

Father Cullen established a foundation to help farmers redirect their efforts from rice to fresh produce and livestock through micro-financing, a system developed in Bangladesh by the 2006 Nobel peace prize winner Dr. Muhammad Yunus that empowers poor people to help themselves.

I went on a humanitarian trip to the remotest areas in Cagayan Valley in the Philippines in October of 2009 invited by the Catholic priest who serves there, Father Manuel Vicente Catral. I witnessed the extreme poverty of farmers and their families.

Father Catral and I decided to look for a solution to the suffering. He suggested the very same idea I had been researching — micro-lending. And so was born our project, “Hope in a Jar.”

Hope in a Jar is a head start to self-sufficiency. It is a project to fund the livelihoods of farmers, single parents, and others who are victims of natural disasters, social discrimination, abuse, political corruption and other conditions that create poverty. It is not a dole out, but an opportunity for the poor to stand on their own, with the promise of success and pay back.

Fathers Catral, Geronimo, Sabban and Banggay are four young, energetic, dedicated Catholic priests whose parishes are in the remotest parts of the Cagayan Valley Province. They have initiated a micro-financing program to give their parishioners a chance for a better life and self-sufficiency.

Through modest donations from generous people in California and Hawaii over the past three years, Father Catral has saved $5,000. He will use that money to start a micro-lending program where the poor can borrow, with minimal interest, small amounts of money to invest in a business venture.

With a $200 loan, at 1 percent to 2 percent interest, a farmer, housewife, single parent or self-supporting college student can start a livelihood by growing vegetables, or raising pigs, chickens or fish, or opening a food stand.

Similar programs have been successful in the neighboring provinces of Ilocos and Isabela. Inspired by the achievements of these local entrepreneurs, Father Catral plans to spearhead his project with the help of volunteers.

Here is where Hope in a Jar comes in. We are asking anyone who wants to help to gather up all the loose change laying around the house, in your car, in your drawers and on your desk at work, and put it in an empty jar or any glass container.

Send the money, through the Philippine National Bank, to Rev. Fr. Manuel Vicente Catral, PNB Tuguegarao, advising him of the remittance number by sending a message to his e-mail address, mavic7079@yahoo.com.

Or you may drop off your jars at Blessed Sacrament Church on Pauoa Road on Sundays, 9-11 a.m., where a volunteer will be at the main door to accept the jars. Write your name, address and telephone number to receive a receipt after the change is counted.

We support one another's faith by the kind of response we give to the Lord in our worship. That response needs to be active, alive, and enthusiastic. We make a difference to one another by the way we are attentive to what is happening at Mass. We can build one another up by the reverence we show. Eucharistic ministers certainly notice the reverence of people as they come to receive the Lord in communion. We can also weaken one another just by our inattention, our look of boredom, our non-participation. We have an affect on one another even when we don't always know it. Our responses and actions during liturgy are part of our ministry to one another as members of the Body of Christ.

Maybe this Advent we should trim and burn some tree limbs, not just trim our Christmas trees.
John the Baptist seems to sternly warn religious leaders that people who ignore his call to change will face a fiery judgment. They’ll be like rotten trees cut down and burned.
I think John liked to shock people. But for good reason. He lived in a world full of poverty and injustice. He wanted people to face how their sins were hurting the world. Don’t let John’s harsh words scare you. True, our sinful habits and attitudes are like rotten trees or bare branches. Things like selfishness and prejudice take away our happiness, hurt others, and keep us from working for a just world. But Jesus can help us trim these “tree limbs” from our lives. I know a young man who decided as a teenager to change his life in a plane ride home from a Catholic conference. He hadn’t been treating girls he’d dated with respect. He’d been hanging out with the wrong crowd. Jesus, he said, showed him what to change and gave him the confidence to do it. He’s a lot happier now.
We light candles in Advent to remember that Christ can bring light (guidance and warmth) to the darkness in our lives and in the world. We also remember that Christ’s light can burn away what hold us back from our full potential. Take time in advent to feel God’s compassion in the sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. Or talk with a teacher, friend, or parent about things you’d like to change. You’ll realize, as you trim your Christmas tree, that Jesus is gently trimming your soul.

On Good Friday, April 2, 2010 Maria Ordonez, Lourdes Clemente and Marissa Ordonez delivered Easter gifts to the residents of Pearl City Nursing Home. The gifts were plastic eggs in multi-color, decorated and wrapped with colored netting cloth tied together by fine ribbons with a "Happy Easter!" greeting. The total number given away was one hundred forty (140) These were placed on the resident's food tray the morning of Easter Sunday. "Doing something simple for fellow Christians who are unable to partake of any formal chuch Easter celebration and bringing to them the news of Jesus' resurrection was a heartwarming experience. The time, money and talent used were God-given gifts that must be shared to others, It was truly a project worthy of the undertaking."

Wednesday, December 8th is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. When Mary was conceived in her mother’s womb, God preserved her from original sin, knowing that she would be the Mother of Jesus. Thus Mary remained pure from the moment of her conception until she died. We honor her under the title of “Immaculate Conception” on Wednesday. It is a Holy Day of Obligation for all Catholics – all Catholics are required to attend and celebrate Mass. This year, to try and encourage everyone to go to Mass, I have added an extra Mass on Tuesday night. The Masses for Immaculate Conception are: Tuesday, December 7th at 7:00 p.m. and Wednesday, December 8th at 6:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

During the season of Advent, we always have a Penance Service with confessions to give us an opportunity to approach Christmas with pure hearts. Resurrection of the Lord’s Penance Service is this Friday, December 10th at 7:00 p.m. There should be at least 8 priests here to help with confessions.

Journal: How did you live out last week's Gospel message? What was tough? What was rewarding?

Hurricane Katrina flooded New Orleans several years ago. Hundreds died. Rescuers found hundreds trapped on rooftops. Some argued that many people suffered only because the government authorities weren't prepared for the storm. As Advent begins this week, Jesus reminds us that people suffered in Noah's time because they weren't prepared. Remember the story? It tells us that sin and injustice - ignored by God's people - caused the world's destruction. Are we ignoring sin and injustice today? This is a good season to think about that. As you do, prepare yourself for Christ in three ways. First, take time this advent to read newspapers closely. Look for evidence of injustice - war, poverty, prejudice. Keep your eyes open at school. Notice kids ignored by others and notice the bullies who prey on the weak. Sadly, you'll see that our world is still plagued by sin and injustice. But remember, Advent is also a season of hope. It comes at the darkest time of the year (at least in the Northern Hemisphere), so we light candles to remember that Christ's power seeks to beat back the darkness of injustice every day. Second, prepare yourself by looking for evidence of grace. To every war, God sends peacemakers. To every kid who feels left out, God sends a friend. Stay awake, Jesus says, and you'll see reasons for hope all over the world. Third, prepare yourself to be grace and hope this season, the person who shines light by standing for peace, feeding the hungry, forgiving an enemy, or welcoming an outcast. Sure, sin floods our world, but God sends boars to the rescue. Jump on board this Advent. People stranded by pain and injustice are waiting for you.

I am sending this to all before I finalize it. Please take a good look. There are lots of blank spaces. I don't want to fill it up, because it it not the regular schedule time. First is the Dec. 7th vigil mass at 7:00pm (Tuesday) for Immaculate Conception. Father wants to try this to give everyone chance to go to mass. Second is the Christmas Eve midnight mass. Third is the day after Christmas. Christmas falls on a Saturday. Father eliminated the regular Saturday evening mass, but he added one extra mass on Sunday the 26th at 11:15am., so, we have 7:30am; 9:30am and 11:15am mass. I want your reply no later than tomorrow. I will finalize it tomorrow night, so I can have it printed before this weekend. Thank you for understanding my predicament. We will have three new Head Ministers for the 5:15pm mass. Journal: How did you live out last week's Gospel message? What was tough? What was rewarding?

I had a friend who wrote a regular school newspaper column in college. He usually knew for sure he was right about an issue and attacked opposing arguments by making fun of them. His mind was closed, just like the Sadducees in this week's Gospel. The Sadducees were members of a religious group whose beliefs differed from Jesus' teachings. For example, they didn't believe in the Resurrection or in angels. But in this week's Gospel, they didn't listen to him and rethink their positions; instead, they made an argument that mocked his beliefs.
That's too common in our society. People don't listen to one another; instead, they attack or belittle one another. It's an easy style to adopt. You don't have to think if you can shout down or mock your opponent.
But that's how you miss God's wisdom. This week's Gospel reminds us that sometimes God challenges our positions on things like religion, school, and family. That challenge will likely come through friends, priests, teachers and family members. The Spirit calls us to keep our minds open, especially to people whom we disagree. Here are some tips:
1, When you disagree with someone, avoid the temptation to close your mind or respond with sarcasm or personal attacks. Think. Ask God to help you consider opposing opinions.
2. Don't let pride get in the way. God calls us to full life, but we miss out-like the Sadducees did-when we're not open to the spiritual and intellectual changes that life brings.

Journal: How did you live out last week’s Gospel message? What was tough? What was rewarding?

That guy Zacchaeus is one of my heroes. He was a little guy. Maybe he was pushed around much of his life by bigger people. The “in crowd” looked down upon him. He collected taxes for the Romans, so there couldn’t have been anything good about him. But Zacchaeus had guts. He couldn’t see Jesus, so he climbed a tree. His job as a tax collector also gave him the power to abuse people, but he told Jesus he would repay people “four times over” if he had treated them unjustly. He also had great wealth but pledged to share it with the poor.
In this week’s Gospel, Jesus teaches by making Zacchaeus a role model. Religious people were shocked that Jesus would dine with Zacchaeus. But Jesus, unlike them, saw the man’s heart and scolded onlookers for judging Zacchaeus.
Zacchaeus can be our role model too. And I bet if you look around, you’ll see Jesus’ spirit in people I write off. They remind me of Zacchaeus. I have friends who have great wealth but focus more on sharing it with the poor than on protecting it for themselves. They remind me of Zacchaeus. I have friends who have been pushed around and belittled. They’ve never been part of the “in crowd.” But they don’t act bitter. They focus on living a good life. They remind me of Zacchaeus.
I bet if you look around your school, parish, or family, you’ll see Zacchaeus. You might catch a glimpse of him if you look in your mirror. I bet people see some of Zacchaeus in you too. Don’t sell yourself short.

Journal: How did you live out last week's Gospel message? What was tough? What was rewarding?

I wish it wasn't true, but when it comes to sin, I know it well. In fact, I'm an expert.
I remember many times in my life when I've had trouble looking myself in the mirror. "You're such a jerk," I've told myself. "You call yourself a Christian? If people only knew the real you."
But over the years I've learned to thank God that Jesus does know the real me, with all my sins … all my faults ... all my hang-ups. I've learned to face them honestly. Why? Jesus can't heal what I hide.
We have all done things we're ashamed of. We all have sinful habits we'd like to break. And this week's Gospel reminds us that the only real remedy is gut-wrenching honesty with God, who is mercy, compassion, and healing.
Here's the truth. Secrets kill. The more we keep sinful mistakes and habits secret, the more we give them power over our lives. They control us until we are humble enough to "beat our breast" (an ancient act that showed sorrow) and say, "O God, be merciful to me, a sinner." Use the sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. It is a perfect way to air our sins and let someone remind us about God's love while giving us advice on how to change. See your priest or a youth minister or another older Christian you respect with whom you should meet regularly to discuss ways of growing closer to God.
Take it from a sinner. God has exalted me when I've admitted how I've given into sin. Christ has provided me with priests and others who've helped me feel better about myself and grow closer to God by looking with compassion at my sins and flaws. It's difficult and humbling, but God has always picked me up and has never let me down.

While I was visiting my cousin Jeanne (she was here last November with my sister, Claire) last month in southern Maryland, I went over to see Minerva and Duane Barnhart. They live in northern Virginia and it was just a half hour drive from Jeanne’s. I called first and then went over to see them. I had trouble finding the complex where they live, but once found, I spent the afternoon and had supper with them before returning to Maryland. It was an enjoyable visit. They are doing well and send their love to all. They still have a deep and fond love for all of you and this great parish. For those who might not know the Barnharts, they are old time parishioners who just moved to Virginia. Minerva was a bundle of energy before she got sick. She helped daily in the sacristy, opened the Church on weekday mornings, set up for Mass and was involved in lecturing, Eucharistic ministry and also the Church environment, especially in obtaining and arranging flowers. She was also on the Pastoral Council.

You know how things happen which surprises us? As I was typing this, the mail arrived. I paused in my work to look at the mail, to see if something needed immediate attention. Lo and behold, there was a card from Duane and Minerva – a thank you note for my visit. What a coincidence! Praise be God – Father, Son and Spirit!

Journal: How did you live out last week’s Gospel message? What was tough? What was rewarding?

Pray always? Some scholars translate this as praying without ceasing. Sounds pretty impossible. But maybe it depends on how you look at it.
Here’s how I pictured prayer when I was young. Kneeling at church. Reciting memorized prayers. Lying in bed, asking for help on a test or with a friend. Prayer took time set aside. So you could never pray always, unless you never ate, studied or worked.
Over the years I’ve come to see God as my friend, a constant companion, always there to support and guide me. So my understanding of prayer has changed. I still think it’s important to set aside special time for prayer, but I’ve learned that I don’t need to wait for those times. God’s hangin’ out with me all day long.
And that’s pretty critical for me. Because several times each day I need divine help. It happens like this. Here’s that person who irritates me. God, give me patience. Here’s someone asking for help. God, what do I do? I feel like an idiot. God, help me believe in myself. What a beautiful day. God, help me be grateful. God surrounds us each moment of our lives. In this week’s Gospel, Jesus told his disciples to recognize that and rejoice. We all want close friends willing to hang out with us. Some of us have them. Some don’t. But we all have a best friend in God, who is always trying to shape us, help us, respond to us.
Here’s a challenge: Pray always, or without ceasing, this week. Make an effort to remember that God walks with you at all times, down every school hallway, across every practice field, through every mall, and across every street. Talk and listen to God throughout the day. In other words, just hang out together.

Got food? The RCIA group along with family and friends gathered on Sept. 26 to prepare and present dinner to the homeless at the Lighthouse Outreach Center in Waipahu. The feast consists of hot dogs, hamburgers, salad, chips and pumpkin pie. After serving, the group dined and fellowshipped with guests. If you, your family, or a group would like to volunteer, our parish plans, prepares, and serves dinner every last Sunday of the month. Sign ups are located on the bulletin board in the worship area. Confirmation I and II: October 10, 2010: The Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time – Read the Gospel: Lk 17:11-19

Journal: How did you live out last week’s Gospel message? What was tough? What was rewarding?

I know a young man who started high school sure he wouldn’t fit in. He remembered how kids made fun of him in junior high. He remembered they always chose him last for teams. He felt so out of place there that he doubted he’d fit in anywhere. I wish he was rare. But there are many teens that feel like outcasts. They find it hard to fit in with friends because of weight, acne, insecurity, the wrong clothes … the list goes on. You might feel that way now.
That’s why this week’s Gospel is so important. The Samaritan leper was a double outcast. First, he was a leper. Leprosy in the Gospel isn’t the disease that causes limbs to decay. It caused flaky or scaly skin. The Jewish religious laws told Jewish people to avoid contact with people who had it or appeared to have it. The Samaritan was also outcast because of his ethnic background. Many Jews rejected Samaritans because they descended from Jews who married non-Jews.
Notice how Jesus reacted to those outcasts. He stopped, noticed their pain, and healed them. That means they could now fit in. People would welcome them. Care about them.
Also notice that the Samaritan was the only one who returned to thank Jesus. Jesus took note that only this “foreigner” seemed grateful.
The point for us?
First, if you feel like you don’t fit in anywhere, call out to Jesus for help like the lepers in the Gospel. Call out through prayer. Call out by talking to an adult who you trust. Call out by getting involved in serving other people who suffer. You’ll find that he’ll answer your prayers. You’ll find a place to fit in and friends who care.
Second, Jesus points out that the Samaritan, the double out-cast, shows more faith than anyone. That means we all need to respect and learn from the people we think don’t fit in.
